What can you be grateful for right now? Regardless of how you’re feeling. If you’re reading this, then you have access to a computer with internet, which means you have an enormous amount of information at your fingertips - that’s something to be grateful for. You could learn a new skill to change your career path, start an online business, or drop a little google man on a street in Japan to see what their houses look like. What about the fact that you’re alive? Living and breathing and able to have opinions and make decisions for yourself? The world is (thankfully) still green, and blue. There are millions of things that are alive all around us, which is pretty amazing. And then think about the fact that our planet is just a tiny speck in a giant universe, full of shiny stars and colorful exploding supernovas. That’s pretty amazing too.
I’m grateful for the amazing friendships I’ve had in my lifetime, people who've let me complain about all my problems and put up with my nerdy diatribes on archaeology and urban foraging and Harry Potter. Even if many of my closest friends and family live a long way from me now, and we’ve fallen out of touch (which is so easy to do), I know we can pick right up where we left off. Home is where your people are, the people who always support you, and I’m so grateful that I can feel at home in many different places. I’m also so so grateful to be healthy and strong and learning new things every day.
I’m trying out a new habit where I journal for a few minutes before I start writing blog posts, so I can get all these self-indulged thoughts about ME out of my head and write for YOU instead. That previous paragraph wasn’t supposed to be there, but let’s just treat it as an example. Now it’s your turn! Get out a pencil and paper, or your favorite word processor, or an old fashioned typewriter if that’s your thing, and start writing. Don’t stop until you feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for life, the universe, and everything, because that’s the secret to happiness.
Ok, joking aside, gratitude DOES work - here’s some evidence. Also do yourself a favor and be grateful for this video.
